[ THE IN-BETWEEN ] - Project 1b - Designing with Architectural Principles + Materiality


This is a pairing project, with me and my workmate Lee Hue Chi. We are required to explore our conceptual and operational procedures in order to produce a significant gesture of architectural space(s). We are to select two keywords from assignment 1a and define them. We then have to explore the potential meanings and implications of these words in the sense that they will inform two areas: generating forms and crafting spaces. We have to design a space with a maximum volume of 150m3 . We are also reminded to explore the effects that material(s) of our choices have on the crafting of architectural space(s) and the possible spatial qualities through an understanding of the tactile (texture, grain) and tectonics (assembly) aspects of materials.

Objectives:

- To encourage thinking and discussion about space(s) and its qualities through architectural conceptualisation.

- To be exposed to the importance of using the art of crafting and making: drawing(s) and model(s) as a critical design tool in the design process.

Outcomes:

For this assignment, we have selected our two keywords: 1. Linking

2. Integrating

- Linking all the interiors spaces to nature, to create an invisible boundary and seamless transition to outdoor. Indoor and outdoor are merged together by integrating natural elements such as light, air, view, raw materials, vegetation and sound.

" Take the indoors out, Bring the outdoor in". - The In-Between.

Our concept:

Architecture is created to response to the need for inside and outside spaces. We always tend to divide spaces into interior and exterior spaces and created a controlled connection between them.

Design processes:

We translate our concept and keywords into few design that focuses on solid&void as translated from open and enclosed spaces, then slowly implementing circulation journey with spatial experiences and also interlocking elements to suit our concept of linking spaces. Then, we come out with the prototype and we further modify it until the space is well crafted.

Reflection:

This project allows me to understand how to design a space even without a site, but also manage to implements different design elements and principles into my spaces. Also, this project allows me to understand how to explore a different spatial experience to users.

It also helps to develop my communication skills with my groupmate in order as I have communicated well to have a good time management and working process with my groupmate.
