[ THE HI: VE ] - Project 1- Design Esquisse - ‘Pre-School Playscape’

Hi, I am Yeo Shi Jie, 0330176.

Introduction:

Project 1 aims to introduce the understanding of materials and environmental poetics, their relationship to the crafting of forms and spaces for specific user groups (children, the elderly etc) within a simple site with minimal context (neighbourhood, landscape etc.). It is to showcase architectural design informed by material use, environmental sustainability awareness in relation to user needs, the activities involved and the respective context. It is also to inculcate understanding of basic building construction; from how structural design is a construct of architectural spatial design, to the tactile quality of materials and how they are put together to achieve spatial and formal quality.

Task:

In this introductory exercise, students shall design a Pre-school Playscape.

- The task is to be executed in teams of 3 people within each tutorial group.

- It is an esquisse; therefore it is to be done with a quick method of rough sketches with conceptual diagrams and plans in a series of workshops and tutorials informed by a series of lectures. The sketches, diagrams, plans will be mounted finally on a presentation board together with the presentation of esquisse models and ONE (1) final model.

- The Playscape shall accommodate a base area not exceeding 36sqm x a height maximum of 2.4m(H). Students are allowed to resolve the form issue as creatively as possible.

- An imagined ‘Pre-school Compound’ may serve as a tool to initiate the understanding of and thereby inform the context of the esquisse.

- Students shall propose creative types of pre-schoolers play activities to be associated with the Pre-school Playscape as the understanding of context deepens.

- The Playscape may be constructed using reasonably weather-proof materials as a response to issues in passive strategies of sustainable design.

Objectives:

- To develop awareness of environmental sustainability in architectural design.

- To develop the student’s ability to meet the imperative and inter-related environmental and social needs, as well as make poetry with materials and spaces.

- To develop understandings on human scale, proportion, ergonomics and materiality.
