[ CUBICAL ] - Project 2c - Final Project - ‘Early Years Centre / Kindergarten’

Hi, I am Yeo Shi Jie, 0330176.

Tasks:

The brief proposes an Early Years Centre for Pre-schoolers.

Taking the understanding of the Environment (both natural and man-made) that informs the site and precedent studies as points of departure, each student shall bring intentions via design directions based on strong contextual position that will then be developed into a concrete design proposal that addresses and respond to the environment and the needs of such community of end-users.

In addition to the provision of the typical learn and play facilities such as the classrooms, playscape spaces indoors and outdoors, nurseries, learning and teaching activities as well as recreational spaces, the students are also tasked with proposing parent-teacher-student activities – based on their understanding of the environment and the communities - as part of the programme for the Early Years Centre.

It is recommended that the design for the Early Years Centre take into consideration the philosophy of Play and Learn as an important facet of fostering the sense of community and contribute in meaningful ways to the design, which is woven together with sustainable environmental strategies and user and programmatic needs into poetic architectural spaces.

Objectives:

- Identify and analyse environmental qualities and contextual needs of a site and apply ideas of environmental sustainability.

- Design and create architectural spaces with consideration of environmental poetics in relation to the basic natural context and existing built context (harness environmental qualities of the site to inform design) which impact on users’ experiences.

- Combine the environmental needs, the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), and the users’ experiences within simple building design in the open landscape/suburban context.

- Establish an appropriate level of understanding of materiality and detailing as means to capture experiential qualities of the design.

- Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas based on clustered spatial typology.

Concept:

An early pre-school that is located in the heart of the PJS 7 Park at Bandar Sunway.

Every kids are unique are their own way, they create their own dreams and imagination through various discovery and exploration of adventures. They meet other kids coming from different cultural background, genders and colours. This is when kids start to create fun and limitless possibilities by sharing, exchanging and interacting with one another to learn and grow together.

The concept centers around the assembly of cubical blocks, emphasizing the cellular growth of cubical spaces through modular approach and aggregation of each building to achieve a living structure within a complex typological form. Cubes of cellular spaces are growing out in open, forming interesting solids and voids that are ongoing and generates fun experiences. Spatial manipulation of cubical blocks form a living cell that kids can growth together within it.
