Project 2: Building Services In Multi-Storey Buildings Involving Public Use

Hi, I am Yeo Shi Jie, 0330176.

Introduction:

This is a group project on building services systems applied and installed in multi-storey buildings involving public use. Students will be introduced to the common systems that are used in a bigger volume of spaces and a variety of users. This exercise requires students to develop their own understanding in the application of building services to make a building technically functional. This discovery will be useful in their future design studio projects to ensure that their building design proposals are practical and efficient.

Objectives:

- To introduce students to the basic principles, processes and equipment of various building services systems found in buildings (experiential learning).

- To expose students to the integration of various building services systems in a building.

- To allow students to demonstrate their understanding of building services systems and statutory requirements.

Task/ Methodology: (Individual)

Students are required to form a group of 5 members. Each group is required explore public buildings online and choose one or more multi-storey building as a precedent study to analyse the following systems associated to building services:

a. mechanical ventilation system

b. air-conditioning system

c. fire protection system (active and passive fire protection system)

d. mechanical transportation system

Each group will need to document their findings accordingly. It is entirely up to the group members to delegate the tasks to each of their members. The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize students with the application of building systems, which in future can be applied to their design proposals. This will enable them to demonstrate their understanding in building operations.

The group is required to obtain estimated dimensions and sizes of the spaces for all the equipment and plant rooms identified. Also, provide explanation and relevant sketches on how the building services components function in a welldocumented A4 report. Students are advised to read and perform a review of building services literature/materials.

Outcomes:

Our group has chosen PAM Center, Bangsar, Selangor, Malaysia as our building for the case study.

Learning Outcomes:

- Identify and understand relevant information related to mechanical ventilation, air-conditioning system, mechanical transportation system as well as fire protection systems.

- Understand the functions and purposes of building services systems.

- Understand the statutory requirements and regulations involved in building designs and its importance towards practicality and public safety.
