IT Project 2: Building Performance Analysis Report [ 6D-BIM Simulation + Evaluation ]

Hi, I am Yeo Shi Jie, 0330176.

The assignment emphasizes the use of relevant 6D BIM-based tools to simulate, analyze and evaluate the architectural design in order to optimize the energy and environmental performance of the design. The nature of assignment is individual, where this case-study based exercise will be adapting the same office building design in the previous assignment. Students are required to analyze and evaluate the current design scheme, to assess its performance and to ultimately develop a proposal of an energy and efficient building thus reducing the climatic impact on the economy, human living, health and safety as well as its surrounding environment throughout its whole lifecycle. Consequently, students are expected to develop their design by considering important sustainable design aspects such as site location, orientation, sun path, form and spatial arrangement and building envelope/facade strategies.

Objectives:

1. To develop an awareness of the performance-based design approach, with building performance analysis as part of the design process in producing an energy and environmental efficient design scheme.

2. To develop an understanding of the climatic impact on building performance and how could architectural design could optimize the building performance.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Produce a 3-dimensional Building Information Modelling (BIM) model which integrates relevant information of building components and material properties.

2. Interpret BIM information for the purpose of building documentations and design solutions including building performance analysis and simulations.

Tasks:

1. Based on the building design from Assignment 1, you are required to further develop your design case study by analyzing the buildings’ performance, to further evaluate and propose appropriate design solutions in order to achieve an optimized and energy efficient building design.

2. Use relevant BIM tools such as Autodesk Insight, Revit or Formit Pro to generate building performance/energy simulation and to conduct appropriate analysis of this base schematic office design. You are encouraged to intensely analyze the results and evaluate potential sustainable design strategies in order to optimize the performance of the building.

3. With the aim to design an energy-efficiency office building, you may analyze and develop the base schematic design with some of the following sustainable design strategies (but not limited to).

-Building location, orientation and sun path studies

-Location of service core(s)

-Building shape and form

-Building envelope/façade design strategies

-Other renewable energies strategies

4. You are then required to re-test the optimized office design scheme by comparing the outcome of building performance simulations of before and after your design changes. You may demonstrate such application with some of the following analysis by using Autodesk Insight and Revit.
