IT Project 1: Collaborative BIM Project - LOD 200 Office Design + BIM Report

Hi, I am Yeo Shi Jie, 0330176.

The goal of this assignment is to expose students on how to design in a sustainable collaborative practice using methods and procedures of BIM. In this assignment students will learn to firstly (1) identify tasks, workflows, technology and other considerations involved in the planning and managing of a collaborative architectural design project, secondly (2) build collaborative and communication skills through negotiating and allocating roles, responsibilities and milestones; and thirdly (3) to evaluate and reflect on the applied strategies and team performance to draw relevant lessons about the usability of BIM in sustainable design. During the learning process, students may be exposed to various computing tools to support the design collaboration and the primary focus of this exercise is to build skills for adopting strategies of using information technologies to support collaborative work. Through this process you will be able to articulate the value and any challenges of the selected BIM approaches and use this experience to guide the sustainable project delivery in future real projects.

Objectives:

1. To explain the latest trend of Information Technology (IT) by applying relevant process and tools used in the context of sustainable construction industry.

2. To develop an architectural design by adopting sustainable collaboration practice namely Building Information Modelling (BIM).

Learning Outcomes:

1. Demonstrate understanding of information and communication technology to inform design in the context of sustainable construction industry.

2. Produce a 3-dimensional Building Information Modeling (BIM) model which integrates relevant information of building components and material properties.

Tasks:

1. Form a group of 6 person.

2. You are a member of a design project team responsible to develop a preliminary design of a 5-storey typical office building;

Office Building Requirements:

-‘Basic open plan layout’ (without interior fit-out).

- 5-Storey Height.

- Office space area shall not exceed 250 sqm per floor (excluding the services core).

- During this design process, you are asked by the client to plan and advise on the more efficient approach to coordinate the design process. This involves planning the work tasks, responsibilities, design coordination and optimization for completing all the tasks.

- Compliance with LOD 200 requirements.

3. Use relevant BIM authoring tools such as Autodesk Revit and Autodesk Naviswork to collaborate and coordinate your office design. As you start to develop your design model with your team members, you may consider and discuss who will be responsible for each part of the model and explore the methods for storing, sharing and managing the common project model.

4. Roles & Responsibilities

a) What are each member’s responsibilities, tasks and milestones?

b) How do you store and share your project file? How do you coordinate the design changes when developing your design?

c) Who check the information for accuracy and format compliance and how?

d) How do each of the team member access relevant file(s) to do their task?

e) How do you ensure that each of your team members has access or work with the latest file?

f) How do you coordinate and review your design with your teammates to avoid collision/clashing in your design?

g) What method and tools you used to discuss, review and coordinate your works?

h) What software, infrastructure do you need to ensure relevant information exchange?

i) How does this process would add value to the process of design project delivery?

j) How does this process would substantially contribute towards a sustainable design practice?
