Project 1: Famous Architect: Experiential Exploration of Building Materials

This is a 7 persons group project with the mixed of BSC and BIA students.

Group Members: 1. Yeo Shi Jie 0330176 (me)

2. Ryan Lai Yew Jin 0330193

3. Lee Hue Chi 0330185

4. Natasha Najwa 0330489

5. Melissa Yap Su Mae 0330675

6. Nur Fatin Nadhirah 0330426 ( BIA )

7. Nurul Batrisyia 0331609 ( BIA )

This project is designed as an exposure for us on building materials that are universally used in building design. Hence, we are have been given one famous architect to conduct case studies on buildings designed by the architect in the context of building materials application in relation to the design concept of the chosen buildings. This online search exercise aims in helping us to explore and understand on the reasoning of the choice of materials used on buildings together with their characters, properties and the influence to the building design in general.

Task:

Based on the selected architect, we have to conduct case studies on 5 buildings by the architect and present our findings in an A4 report.

Contents:

- A brief background of the architect

- Historical background of the chosen buildings

- Narrative of the materials’ experiential exploration (suitability of materials used in relation to the building design) on significant areas or spaces of the chosen buildings together with the types, characteristics, and physical properties of the materials. (Each building need to have two (2) spaces or areas

- Images of chosen buildings (floor layout, elevations, three dimensional perspective etc.)

- Overall conclusion of the application of materials by comparing the chosen buildings

Outcome:

Our selected famous architect is Kenzo Tange, a well-known japanese architect.

5 Buildings chosen:

1. Hiroshima Peace Center, Nagasaki

2. St. Mary Cathedral, Tokyo

3. Yoyogi National Gymnasium, Tokyo

4. Shizuoka Broadcasting System, Tokyo

5. Fuji TV Building, Tokyo

Reflection:

This project allows me to understand more on the properties, function and details of different materials on buildings. Also, it helps me to understand more on how to apply suitable materials on different buildings based on the aspects such as site condition, history, preference, concept, design and so on.

Taylor's Graduate Capabilities (TGCs):

This project helps me to realise lifelong learning is important as I have learnt to apply my knowledge in building materials into my architectural design in the future. It also helps me to develop my communication skills with my groupmates as I have communicated appropriately, tolerate and understand each others in producing an efficient and productive work. Also, it helps to explore my digital literacy as I have used some software editing tools to help me in analysing some diagrams and design in this project.
