Project 2: Contextual Architecture Study

Task:

The Contextual Architecture Study project requires students to analyse how the selected architectural design responded to its contexts. Findings from the study is presented in the form of A2 presentation visual.

Learning Outcome:

Discuss the relationship between architecture and its social, cultural, and intellectual context within the Asian region.

This is a group project ( as a whole ) + individual project ( a specific part ) which requires us to identify a building in Asia and investigate the context of the building to its context. There are a list of elements to investigate, and I have chosen Space Organisation and Access Hierarchy as my research area.

Group Members:

1. Yeo Shi Jie 0330176 ( me )

2. Ooi Zhi Hong 0331709

3. Lee Hue Chi 0330185

4. Ryan Lai Yew Jin 0330193

5. Natasha Najwa 0330498

6. Melissa Yap Su Mae 0330675

List:

- Space organization and access hierarchy (me)

- Sky line, compression and height ( Ryan )

- Features related to the form of the building ( Ooi Zhi Hong )

- Building material and systems ( Natasha Najwa )

- Image making elements ( Lee Hue Chi )

- Dimensions of history and social memories ( Melissa )

Space Organisation and Access Hierarchy:

- Spatial organisation responds to the new functional and working needs of users.

- Spatial planning reinforces the existing social and cultural systems.

Outcome:

We have chosen Temple of Heaven, Beijing, China as our building to investigate.

Site Context:

Temple of Heaven is divided into 3 parts:

- The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (祈年殿)

- The Imperial Vault of Heaven (皇穹宇)

- The Circular Mound Altar (圜丘坛)

Reflection:

Throughout this project, I have understood how a building responds to its context, with different specific elements make up and form a Contextual Architecture. Also, I also learnt to understand each of the design elements and the story behind those elements in a building. Overall, this project is essential as a guideline for me to design a building based on the environment context.

TGC ( Taylor's Graduate Capabilities ):

I have explored my thinking and problem solving skills throughout this assignment as I have think creatively to get the best solution for my project. I have also developed communication skills as i have communicate well with my group members and tolerate each others throughout the project. Lastly, the most important is the digital literacy as the project requires certain software and computer editing skills to complete.
