Introduction:
Community Service is a form of service learning. Service learning is basically using curriculum to help foster a sense of care and concern among students for their community and the world at large. This can be a village, an orphanage or a distant dying species. In the process of us recognizing and taking steps to meet the needs of others, it will enhance our creative, critical and reflective skills.
This subject is designed - To inculcate a sense of social responsibility in the students. - To promote the culture of caring and respect towards all members of society. - To understand the community around them. - To understand themselves in relation to their community.
Week 1: Introduction of the Nest Project [ STUDY SPACE ]
The students were exposed to the briefing of the nest project by CSI lecturers. We were briefed about the module outline and rubrics, upcoming project timelines, various events and activities to complete in this semester. After that, we had formed a group of 11 members including two students from SoED ( School of Education ) with us, students from SABD ( School of Architecture, Building and Design ). For me, it was a good opportunity and interesting to collaborate with student from other faculty as we could exchange our ideas throughout the project. Simultaneously, I was also chosen to be the leader of the group by my members, so I was looking forward to co-operate with my members in completing the project.
For the assignment task, all of us were introduced about the basic service learning, concept and theories of social problems in the community and how our actions would help to make a change in the community. We were then given a site - PPR Lembah Subang 2, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia, to prepare ourselves to analyse and understand the context of the environment and spaces, and also the sense of community.
For the main task, it was informed that each of the group have to execute a design of a study spaces for children in an assigned family. From that, we are to come up with plans and ideas on how to design a study space that will suit the family and environment spaces at the given site. After that, we got to communicate among the group members to have some preliminary ideas and plans about the upcoming tasks and lists of things to prepare for the site visit next week.
Week 2: Site Visit [ PPR Lembah Subang 2 ]
We had our first site visit to PPR Lembah Subang 2 to have a broad understanding about the living environment and the surrounding. After we were assigned with a particular family, we embarked on our journey to visit to the family and got to know them through interviewing. Our family comes from a Chinese background, which consists of 3 children who are currently in their primary and secondary schools. At the same time, we had our pre-intervention survey by asking them question regarding some living context and needs for a desire study spaces for the children. We also analysed the living space so that it could help us to develop our ideas on proposing an ideal study space that not only suits the children, but also the overall interior quality. For record purpose, we also prepared our questionnaire to jotted down the information about the family. I also helped to take some photos of the living space and the environment for later uses. Visiting wise, we also asked the best visit time for the family to prepare themselves so that they have ideas about our plans throughout the weeks.

Week 3: Proposal & Ideas Development
We had our group meetings and started to do our researches about study space for children. I also helped to make a digital model of the spaces of our family unit so that we could have better visualisation on how to design a study spaces that would best fit the children of the family. From that, I came out with the floor plans, sections, 3D perspectives and some drawings of the spaces while my members helped to gather their researches and information that could help with the ideas development of the study spaces.
Some of the things that we had prepared were: orthographic drawings of the spaces, lists of budgets, furnitures, layout and arrangement, reference pictures, needs and essentials for a ideal study spaces, materials and so on. Moreover, we also divide our tasks to that each members had their own tasks to do while we also discusses for the proposal presentation on the next week through the gathering of information we had.
We also had our tutorials with our tutor, Ms Camelia and updated her about our plans and ideas on the study spaces, and made some changes based on her consideration. At the same time, we also updated the family about our plans so that they could agree with our decisions to better prepare ourselves for upcoming activities.
Week 4: Proposal Presentation
After multiple discussion and confirmation, we had come to finalise our proposal and had our proposal presentation. From that, we got the opinions and feedbacks from various tutors and also mentors from Redha Youth to guide us for the activity. We then also made some minor changes according to the feedback given and again updated the family about the final plan for the task to proceed smoothly.
Week 5 & 6 : Proposal Submission & Collecting Materials
Our group started to gather the materials and accessories needed according to our material lists. We also followed the budget given, which is maximum RM 500 per group. From there, we chose the required funitures and materials wisely so that we could keep ourselves within the budget. We also visited severe furniture and hardware shops to compare the prices and qualities so that we could make our decision and plans for that. Of course, we did not forget to update our families on our progress of the week. Some of the members also helped with their tasks such as preparing financial reports, taking photos and clips for record purpose, distributing and arranging of the materials to be used for the upcoming week and so on. We also ensure the quantities of the chosen materials to prevent any wastage.
Week 7 & 8: Arranging and Cleaning of Spaces
After we had finished collecting the materials needed, we began to clear out the space and area that we had proposed for the study space. Once again, we visited the family few times in these few weeks to start to clean the spaces. We also helped the families to pack their belongings in boxes and also started to clear out the space. Works that were done were cleaning of tables, floors, and walls, reallocating of items and belongings based on our layout plan and arranging of disorganised items so that to ensure a better interior ventilation, views, lights and also circulation movement. Since the study materials of the children were in a clutter, we helped them to organise the stuffs in a neat manner. This also helps to encourage the children to be self-discipline while using the study space later.
Week 9 & 10: Execution of Design Works [ Final Outcome ]
These are the most significant weeks we all were awaiting for to finally execute our team design. I was so excited as not only I got to work together with my teammates, but also co-operated with the mentors from Redha Youth in completing the tasks. I as one of the photographers and videographer assisted my members to record and film the entire process throughout the execution of work. We had fun and interaction with the children while doing our works together. We also informed our tutor regarding the progress of final execution.

My members and I helped to edit the video while some of the members worked with the 2A1 posters to be exhibited on the exhibition day next week. I also had interviews with people from Nest Project and I had communicated with them regarding the reflection and thoughts for the overall community project. I was so satisfied with the work as it was a great experienced to work with the residents and also my teammates.
Week 13 & 14: Exhibition [ PPR Lembah Subang 2 ]
Coming to the final week of the event, in which we proudly presented our design to the residents, and people from KPKT and Redha Youth. We have showcased our design of study spaces and we felt happy and satisfied overall in completing the task successfully. We also thanked everyone involved that had also helped us in executing the outcome.
FINAL OUTCOMES:
1. Proposal
To provide a functional study space and reorganize the spaces for proper storages and comfortable living environment that children will continue to use in the future, we have proposed individual study space for each of the children to solve the problem of lacking of spaces to study. The current study space is just a small table where the children need to take turn to study. Individual tables help to solve the problem of argument among the children whenever they share the table.
2. Posters
3. Videos
4. Individual Reflection
5. Design Outcomes
BEFORE
The study area was just a flip table which only allows 1 child to study at one time. There will be arguments between children when they share the table. Therefore, only 1 child can study at one time. The space is also not organised in a proper manner as the study materials are all over the places.
AFTER
The study area now is more refined and a bookshelf is used to isolate the study area from the electrical appliances to minimize the distraction of the electrical appliances to the children. The learning space is now more organized and clean which allows the children to focus more on their studies.
6. Design Objectives
Our objective for this project can be categorized into 4 aspects
Usability
We aimed to design a functional learning space that is user-friendly for the children and can be used in a long-term.
Concentration
The learning space that we aimed to design will reduce the distraction from different sources of electrical appliances that they faced from their surrounding such as television, computer, clothes and more. This helps the children to focus on their studies.
Organized
We provide a neat learning space, where the children have their books and stationaries placed at the compartments of the shelf accordingly. This also helps to cultivate self-discipline of the children from day to day.
Smart
Ultimately, we want the learning space to be utilized well by the children that will improve their learning experience. Smart table lighting also enhances the experience of night study by the children.
Conclusion:
We hope that the changes that we have brought to their family will benefit their children in their learning journey, not just in the present but also future and beyond.
Moreover, we also hope that it could help the whole family as they now have a shelf to put their items in a more organized manner to have a better living environment other than just a learning space.
Also, it would be happy to know that the children will utilise the learning space well and appreciate our design, as it is our biggest motivation to strive for our best in the future engagement in community.
